Birthday Countdown...

Posted by GoryBlizzard - January 22nd, 2010

As of this writing, there are 21 days left before I turn 20 years old.

For those of you who aren't so great at math, today is January 22nd. My birthday is on February 12th.

I plan on assembling a wish list and posting it here as soon as I give it a bit more thought, but I think some people here have a general idea of what I might want. However, one thing comes to mind immediately:

Money money money.

If you want to PayPal me, my e-mail address is goryblizzard@gmail.com.

Hope that didn't come off as greedy, because I actually really need some.

It would also be highly appreciated if you could get me a black Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290/B 12.1 MP digital camera or a PSP, and if you can somehow manage to get either or both of those items, you'll be rewarded with my eternal love.

If your budget is really small, then I suppose you can send me a birthday card, a few cents or dollars, a flashlight or a hat. Just something small that will hopefully mean a lot in the long term.

Flashlight? :P I wonder what would happen if I made a post like this, hehe. Birthday, Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. Ask for Pay Pal money each time, haha.

Yeah, most people would probably go nuts if you made a post like this. I don't ask for PayPal money on here often, but throughout my entire time here, I've received $30 in total, which may be more than a lot of people.

Also Wade, I know you have plenty of flashlights. I think it's a safe bet you have more than just about anyone else I can think of on NG, so let me know if you have any you think are useless. I'd really mainly use a flashlight for when I'm going through the woods upstate, or through my local park at night. I remember I showed you a couple of my flashlights on Stickam this past summer, but they're really nothing special and I need something better for camping out or navigating through more rural areas.

What size of a flashlight were you thinking? What type of battery?

Ideally, I would like a Fenix TK11, which uses 18650 batteries.

However, on the cheaper (and of course smaller) side, I could also use a Fenix LD01, which is similar in size to one of my flashlights, but far more effective--and just takes one AAA battery. I also like the FX-LD20B, which I think takes 2 AA's to power.

Also, these three are all flashlights I've tried before, and I'm satisfied with the way they work. If you have any in mind that are similar but you think are better, let me know and I'll look into them.

Wow! I'm impressed you have tired out those flashlights. Where did you get to try them out? You may also want to check out the 4sevens Quark series. 4sevens is a company started by David Chow. He was the first big Fenix flashlight dealer in the US, fenix-store.com. He now has 4sevens.com and makes his own flashlights. He basically took all the good ideas from various brands and customer feedback and made his own brands of lights.

Check out some of them here: http://www.4sevens.com/index.php?cPat h=297_305

The AA models are nice because AA's are cheap and easy to find, and you can use NiMH AA's, like Sanyo Eneloops, etc, and just recharge them. The 2xAA will have more output, but be larger.

At this point I would avoid the Cree XR-E LED's and look for Cree XP-E or XP-G. They will produce a cleaner beam. The XR-E's are notorious for having a dark ring (halo) in the beam, around the hot spot. For walking you want a nice smooth beam.

The Fenix TK11 is good for throwing the light a long way, but won't be as useful up close. It's more for lighting up things 30+ feet away. If you're mainly looking to light up things up close, like a walking path, a floodier beam is nice.

I should do a Ustream and show you some various beam profiles.

I tried those lights out at a flea market in Hyde Park, NY just this past September. It's about 80 miles north of where I live, although I'm sure there are many flashlight sellers around me. I tried those lights out through a friend of my grandfather's who set up his stand in an adjacent area, and the guy let me toy with some of his flashlights for about 10 minutes. Those ones just stood out to be the most, although he wasn't willing to just hand them off to me for free. I wish he would have considered it, though.

I just went to that link right now. I'll continue to look through the site throughout the night.

Let me know when you go on Ustream so I can see the beam profiles--either later this evening or whenever else you're up to it.

Also, for something cheap, but solid, with long run times from a single AAA battery, the Fenix E01 is pretty cool:

http://www.4sevens.com/product_info.p hp?cPath=22&products_id=443

It will put out enough light to walk by, but the beam quality is so-so and has a purplish tint to it. It uses a Nichia GS 5mm LED, which last I checked is their most efficient 5mm LED, but the quality of light produced isn't as nice as the high power Cree LED's.

Thanks for bringing that one up. That should satisfy some of my most basic lighting needs, and it's certainly more than compact enough.

Everyone should have a couple flashlights around the house. Never rely on a single flashlight, if it breaks, you're out of luck if you need it. Cavers, mountain climbers, hikers, etc, should always carry AT LEAST two flashlights, and spare batteries. Cavers and mountain climbers have died because they only had one flashlight and it failed on them. Anyone who enjoys the out doors and is out after dark can benefit from a good flashlight. You should also keep a couple in your car in fe my allowing other motorists to see you on the side of the road. Or even if you just walk down the road after dark a flashlight can help traffic see you. I often see walkers carrying a flashlight if they are walking in the dark.

I'd recommend a small keychain light for your key ring, and then a larger light in your car, and one or two around the house.

That first point is very true. Fortunately, I found both of my flashlights I was looking for last night--the only two I currently have in my apartment. I need a small keychain light too, now that you mention it, because it's been in the back of my mind for a while. Sometimes I carry my small Duracell flashlight with me, but I don't often use it in my neighborhood because there's way more than enough lighting during the evening and late night hours.

I tend to use flashlights way more often whenever I'm in rural or suburban areas. And even though I don't drive that often (living in NYC really doesn't necessitate driving all that much with the exception of several neighborhoods), like you, I've seen walkers using flashlights both upstate and in Long Island. That's sometimes helpful for me whenever I'm the driver.

I'll give you half..

OF NOTHING!

Oh well.

i would give you money if i wasn't a poor mexican.

other than that happy early birthday, i guess.

Thanks.

What about a fedora?

Better than nothing, I guess.

seeing this conversation between you and wade makes me laugh and think " wow, flash light nerds "

I'm also a bit tight on cash. hmmm I'm not sure what to get you. sorry bud.

Wade is pretty much the flashlight god around here.

I'll be going pretty far upstate in a couple of weeks (not for long, though), so my search for a new flashlight continues.

I'm also still very tight on cash too, but I've also found a few money making opportunities that will hopefully work in my favor.

I like flash lights too guise.

...

Sorry Gory I've nothing to give because I've got nothing. All I can do is wish you a happy early birthday.

Thanks anyway.

I just crashed my car, broke my laptop, and got a phone bill for 300$. IM NOT GIVING SHIT.

But hey man, I will wish you a happy birthday :D

Ask stuff from your relatives bro.

Ugh, wow, that's a lot for anyone to go through...I wouldn't give shit either if I were you, so good choice.

I've already asked most of my relatives and friends--they don't have much to give me, sadly (most are out of work), but I'll gladly take whatever they can give out.

If I wasn't running on a tight budget right now, I'd be more than happy to buy you something. I'm sorry, but I still wish you a Happy Birthday.

Okay then.

Happy Birthday Gory. I can't give you an expensive digital camera, but I could send you a few bucks through the mail since I don't have a Paypal account.

Hmm...

Don't trust me with your address? lol, I don't blame you.

You just don't seem like a trustworthy enough person based on my encounters with you on Stickam.

hahaha, I thought that would be the reason. But it's all gewd, I don't have to send you money if you don't want me to.

I'm afraid you're only going to send me play money.

That's all.

well if i could i would ship you my psp but i guess saying happy birthday is just as good lol.

K...
